Feel the Holiday Spirit with the 16th Annual Old World Christmas Market

We’re quickly closing in on one of our most favorite times of the year, which can only mean one thing: the 16th Annual Old World Christmas Market is just around the corner. With that impending chill in the air and Christmas décor beginning to pop up in a few select areas around town, everyone is eagerly looking forward to the warmth and merriment that is brought forth by this special event each year.

So if you’re not a resident, you may be wondering; what exactly is the Old World Christmas Market? Well, similar to the centuries-old Christkindlesmarkt (Christ Child’s Market) of Nuremberg, Germany, this Elkhart Lake tradition is a place where local and international artisans can come and display their goods. Held this year at The Osthoff Resort from December 6-15, 2013, visitors will have the opportunity to wander the aisles of the heated tent and browse through the collection of hand-carved German nutcrackers, Russian nesting dolls, Czech blown-glass ornaments, fine apparel, exquisite jewelry, European delicacies and much more!

Once you’ve gotten tired on shopping, feel free to take a break in the Old World Food Court and enjoy all of the delicious German dishes that are offered. With everything from Nuremberg bratwurst, hot gluhwein, sauerbraten, dumplings and Wiener Schnitzel, to potato pancakes, red cabbage, pulled pork and apple strudel, we’re sure you will have no trouble finding something that you like!

Admission to the Christmas Market is $6 per adult, a free for children 14 and under who are accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Discounted ticket prices are available for groups of 10 or more so feel free to visit the official Old World Christmas Market website for more information.

The 10-day event is open daily from 10am-5pm so be sure to make this a must during your next trip to Wisconsin!

Get Spooky this Halloween with Caper Company’s Ghost Walk!

In some minds, the arrival of fall means one thing: Halloween is just around the corner. Not only do we get excited for costumes and copious amounts of sweets, but deep down there is a part of all of us that enjoys the thrill of being scared. Halloween brings ghost stories, haunted houses and all of that kind of chill-inducing stuff that many of us wait all year for and we just can’t wait to get our fix. If this sounds anything like you, then you definitely need to check out the Port Washington Ghost Walk during your next trip to the Sheboygan area.

About a 35-minute drive south of Sheboygan, Port Washington is a charming New England style village at first glance. Once you peel back its layers however, you’ll find that this area is extremely rich in haunted history. The 2013 Port Washington Ghost Walk is presented by Caper Company and will take place at various times on both Friday October 25th and Saturday October 26th. Tour-goers will explore some of the town’s most historic downtown haunts and the ghostly necropolis by candlelight for approximately two hours, and we’d be truly surprised if you walk away having not seen something a bit spooky!

Walk-ins are welcome at $16 per person, but we would highly recommend that you pre-order your tickets and reserve your spot for $13, as each tour takes a maximum of 20 people and you don’t want to miss out. All tours will begin at the Wisconsin Chair Company historical marker at the marina, so meet your tour guide there and be sure to wear comfortable shoes and layers, as the entire tour will take place outdoors.

By the end of the night, you’ll likely be ready to get out of Port Washington and rid yourself of the chills! Hop back in the car and meet us back here at Inn on Hillwind where you’re safe from all of the ghouls, goblins and spirits that you may have encountered on your tour! We’ll leave the light on – just in case!

Kettle Moraine State Forest: Many Ways to Enjoy the Beauty of Fall Foliage

While there is, of course, plenty to do and see all year long in Sheboygan, we have to say that the fall season is particularly special throughout this area. With a crisp chill in the air and all of the colorful foliage at the height of its beauty, now is the most ideal time to begin planning your next fall vacation in Wisconsin.

Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin - Inn on Hillwind

The change of season, which normally starts the first of October and continues throughout the entire month, is showcased beautifully on the Northern Unit of Kettle Moraine State Forest. That being said, if you are the type of person who craves being active, you’ll find a number of fun activities and events for everyone in the family right here. From fishing and hunting, to ATV riding and more, there is a seemingly endless list of adventurous ways to celebrate the fall season in this state park.

For those most interested in simply taking in seasonal foliage, we would highly recommend taking a hiking trip along the trails of Kettle Moraine’s Greenbush recreation area, which offers over 13 miles of hiking fun and gorgeous scenery. However, if you’re looking for more of a challenge, consider another option – the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which runs for long yet gorgeous 31 miles. Since there is so much to do and see in Kettle Moraine, you and your family can spend a weekend in the area and visit a different portion of the park each day.

An added bonus to all of this is the fact that the Inn on Hillwind is conveniently located only eight miles from the beautiful Greenbush Recreation area. Whether walking, biking or ATVing along the park’s trails, guests are never too far from being able to enjoy nature and revel in the changes of color that a Wisconsin fall season has to offer.

Treat yourself and your family to a weekend of fun, relaxation and celebration by visiting the Inn on Hillwind and Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Northern Unit this upcoming month. When you stay with us, you’re just minutes away from the splendor of fall!

Sheboygan: the Bratwurst Capital of the World

With the famous Brats Days having come and gone earlier this month, we have a feeling that some of you may start to crave a few more of Sheboygan’s signature sausage soon enough. While others may attempt to imitate, most everyone knows that Sheboygan is the Bratwurst Capital of the World, which makes it hard for brat lovers to stay away for too long. Luckily for you, though Brat Days is only one weekend out of the year, this town is frying up the best each and every day.

Taking a step back here for a moment, you may be wondering how this whole brat-epidemic came to be in the first place. Bratwurst can be found almost anywhere in the U.S. now, so what makes the Sheboygan bratwurst worthy of the “Best in the World” title?

Well after a heated battle against Bucyrus, Ohio in 1970, Judge John Bolgert made the official call, barring all others from using the title. Noted on August 14th of that year, the landmark decision stated that, “The citizens of Sheboygan, through their sausage makers, bakers and backyard chefs, have established their right to the herein litigated title, not only by virtue of claim, but also by virtue of performance.”

This hard-earned title is greatly due to a few key elements, but the most prominent of all may be the fact that once the brats have been cooked to perfection, they are then served on a delicious Sheboygan hard roll. As a special kind of semmel roll, the Sheboygan hard roll is the only way to eat a bratwurst, in our opinion. Though there may be a variety of recipes and different brands floating around the internet and in grocery stores across the country, none can truly pass for the real thing.

So in addition to our famous bratwursts, we find that a lot of Sheboygan visitors are also on the lookout for a few hard rolls to take back home with them after their trip has ended. If this sounds anything like you, we would highly suggest you check out Johnston’s Bakery on Superior Avenue for some of the best. Any Sheboyganite would be happy to rave about the superiority of our city’s brats, so if you’d like to know more, just ask us! We’d love to make your stay here more as enjoyable as possible by pointing you in the direction of the best meals outside of the Inn on Hillside walls.
